What’s New and Old Summary:
- Bunch of painting got done on Saturday, Terry got the primer coat on
the boom, Tom continued his artistry on the life boats. Doug P. spruced up the
folkshole and I continued painting the underside of the upper deck.
- Our Chief Doug was a fine tour guide for a number of visitors to the
boat on Saturday.
- Jim and all of us did a clean up of the old paint items and storage
area.
- Need to get rid of the old paint cans will try to get them but if you
are going by the boat and can get rid of them great.

Still lots of painting to get done!

What is the gate code?

Volunteers: While looking at the local community centers I noticed a couple of
links to organization that help list groups looking for volunteer‘s. I am not
sure what the legal or insurance requirements are if you get people to come down
and just help out without being members. Would be wondering what happens if
someone takes a header onto the deck can they make a claim against the Society?

Unique trend seems to be out there in regards to steam equipment. I am wondering
when the engine room will be getting pin strips and maybe some flames painted
onto our equipment?

Deck:


1.      Painting – Ongoing (Requires several warm dry day’s)
a.       Russ Coepland – See Russ for directions.
b.      Painting requires that we have a few dry days and that a few days of dry weather will follow.
c.       It is very important that you use drop clothes or something suitable to prevent paint from getting on the deck or other equipment such as brass works. Walk around shows paint has been getting on some areas of the deck planking. Watch for paint on your work clothes as this can brush off onto other areas.
2.      Brass cleaning – Ongoing
a.       Looking for work there is always something to shine.
 
 
Engine Room:


       1. Engine room cleanup:
       1. Brass cleaning, The metal polishing compound is located in the port shelf top by the boiler.
       2. Looking for something to do grab a rag and suds always something to wipe down. This includes the top catwalk area of the engine room.
       3. Engine room general cleaning is done with a Rona product, "Heavy Duty General Purpose Cleaner and Degreaser" unfortunately we do not presently have onboard.
       4. Stored back of the electrical panel and the lube oil tank.
       2. Engine turn (Monthly Task): Weekend (Not scheduled).
       1. Turning of the engine will dependent upon when the engine was last running. The monthly turning routine is only when the vessel is laid up.
       2. Since a dock test is scheduled for the weekend of May 25/10 then there is no requirement for a manual turn of the engine.
       3. Doug/David – See either if you are not sure what to do.
       4. Next engine rotation is required by the weekend of (Not scheduled).
       5. Note that the last crank needs to be left in the upper position to avoid leaving it in the sump.
       3. Engine room dry run tours:
       1. During the trips you can come down to the engine room to gain exposure to the operations. Please only one or two people at a time. The engine room is rather confined so too many people will hamper operations and could prove dangerous in some situations.
       2. With the amount of work being done to get everything ready the dry run’s have kind of fallen off.
       3. Please feel free to trace and draw out any piping etc and ask questions. The more exposure you get to the engine room the better.
 
 
 
Galley:


1.      Clean up the floor, counters, etc. this needs to be done every time people are there tracking dirt etc around. Please make sure any used utensils and dishes are also cleaned up and at least left in the dish rack.
a.       Use the “All Purpose” cleaner stored under the sink. Couple of squirts on the floor, mop it around and there we go.
 
Trip Tasks:


       1. During the trip over there is additional time where the ship and be cleaned up and made more presentable. Typically we have about six hours on a long trip where work can be preformed.
       2. This work can include the brass cleaning of external rails, painting and the storing of none required items or equipment.
       3. Use extreme caution when doing any work as the ship is at sea it is subject to movement you may not be readily aware of.
       4. Ask a senior person before attempting any tasks. Ask the deck lead or engine room lead if there is any work they would like to see done or feel is safe to do.
       5. Once we are dockside everyone needs to share the tasks.
       1. Watching that people safely board the ship. Lend a hand make sure you ask first if they do need a hand or would like a hand. Inadvertently grabbing someone could cause more of an issue during boarding.
       2. Make sure people are aware of any tripping, slipping and falling hazards.
       3. Immediately rope off and cleanup any potential hazards.
       4. Keep one person at the ladder areas and to the access points to the engine room and upper deck areas to lend assistance if needed.
       5. Engine room to point out potential low head room and grease areas. Do not do any work if people are below you or have the chance that people may be coming into an area where you are.
       6. If you must do work of some sort to make the ship operational i.e. Repair a break down. Then rope the area off.
       7. Limit the number of people on board so those already are on board can safely move around.
 
Trip Schedule:
 
-          Don’t take this information as the Gospel.
-          Check onboard and with Russ for any recent changes not updated here.
 
Read this first….
All members wishing to crew the vessel MUST sign the appropriate "crew list" for each of the planned trips he wishes to make. NO EXCEPTIONS. Those who live out of town must contact Russ or the chief engineer for inclusion on the list.
The "crew list" must be signed at least TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE of the trip. This is required to ensure an adequate crew is available to safely operate this vessel. If adequate crew is not available, the trip will be cancelled.
This is necessary so that bunks can be assigned and groceries purchased
 
Trip Schedule: Again double check and sign official list onboard.

 

  Vancouver Maritime Museum to Ganges and return to Steveston Heritage Shipyard.. Dates and times not known at this time.
